The role of digital technology in children’s lives begins even before birth, with parents often sharing pictures of scans, while after the birth, photos are emailed, uploaded and shared on various social media platforms. All sorts of digital texts in children’s lives become existing resources in their literacy repertoires. Educators need to reflect on how to best nurture the digital literacy skills that their young learners may bring to school as well as develop them. The media marketing and online nature of many digital literacy experiences also reminds us of the importance of teaching critical literacy when using digital texts. This keynote will examine the literature around literacy and technology use, particularly in the early years, and propose a number of pedagogical guides that can be applied for incorporating digital resources in literacy learning experiences, from picture books to popular culture.
